83 ‘Rest Up’ - Jim Basnight, single (Big Deal, 1993)
Seattle may an unlikely place to find Power Pop treasures (‘Grunge’, with its aggressive, anti-fashion and anti-melody slacker stance was the very antithesis of Power Pop), but this is where Jim Basnight has been making records for years. Sadly he was one of the few artists in that city not to be signed up in the late '80s, but there are a small coterie of us who think his Tom-Petty-meets-REM songs dwarf those of his noisy neighbours |

Jim Basnight haunts modern rock
By Jeff Trainor
Jim Basnight has seen plenty of change in the rock music business since the 1970s.
He's seen it firsthand, like a devoted surfer following the transitory contours of the ocean's swells. And, like the surfer who keeps paddling out in pursuit of the perfect break, Jim Basnight has always stayed in the water. It may get lonely sometimes, as shortboard-riding kids with short attention spans come and go. But, ultimately, it's worth sticking with it for the rare, perfect waves that others miss.

Staying Power By LAURA PIERCE, Contributing writer After more than two decades, music remains the mistress of his life for Jim Basnight In pop music, rarely are careers measured in decades. Fads come and go. Bands form and split. Today's rising star can be next week's loser-out. But don't bother explaining those odds to Jim Basnight.
A fixture on the Seattle pop scene in the ‘80s, Basnight is still on the road today with his aptly named Jim Basnight Band, rocking hard and honing his craft. After around 20 years, multiple bands and about 500 songs to his credit, the stanwood resident has demonstrated more staying power than his six-string Fender guitar. |

In the process, rock music rediscovered melody and it didn't take long before power-pop, the ultimate "feel good" genre, was rampant again. |
